QWO is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. QWO contains enzymes called collagenases that target the structural causes under the skin, where cellulite starts. What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is typically caused by bands of collagen, called septae, that attach the skin to the muscle. As fat accumulates between the skin and the muscle, the “dimples”, are caused by the septae tightening the skin closer to the muscle between the pockets of fat. This action makes the fat appear encircled in divots, which show up as dimples in the skin. Cellulite is a highly prevalent condition, affecting about 90% of women. That’s right-most women, regardless of their age, weight, or ethnicity, have cellulite. And, it’s completely normal. However, many women are unhappy when they notice cellulite on their bodies, especially around the hips, butt, and thighs.

QWO vs. Other Cellulite Treatments

There are existing cellulite treatments on the market. However, many are either invasive, ineffective, or only work for mild to moderate cellulite. Other cellulite treatments may work by severing the septae. The treatment Cellfina®, for example, uses a tiny blade to sever the bands, while laser treatments do so with thermal energy. These surgical procedures require more downtime to heal and may not be very effective. The major difference with QWO is that it seems to loosen the septae chemically, rather than severing them mechanically. As we discussed earlier, enzymes in the injectable work to dissolve the tethered septae, diminishing the appearance of cellulite without requiring significant recovery.
